Emma Norman is the Chair of Native Environmental Science at the Northwest Indian College (NWIC), where she has been on faculty since 2001. Chartered by Lummi Nation, NWIC serves more than 200 tribes and First Nations throughout North America, through the main campus on Lummi Nation and six extended site campuses (Swinomish, Tulalip, Port Gamble, Nisqually, Muckleshoot, and Nez Perce). NWIC offers undergraduate training (B.S. degree) in one of the only Native Environmental Science programs in the world, a program designed to support students in becoming leaders in their fields and in their communities. The curriculum is place-based, experiential, and culturally grounded, drawing on the deep and sustained connections to place and commitment to environmental protection to guide its programming. Emma’s academic background is in Geography, with a specialty in transboundary water governance and decolonizing borderlands. Emma is a founding steering committee member of the Indigenous Aquaculture Collaborative.
